Safe LGBTQIA+ Travel Destinations

There's nothing more exciting than a vacation!

It is a chance to experience new cultures, have fun adventures, and truly relax away from work and other responsibilities. It is a joy that everyone should experience, and that of course doesn’t exclude LGBTQIA+ individuals. Unfortunately, the world is not as kind to all people as it should be, so caution is required.

The good news is that there are many awesome destinations where you can visit and have the time of your life. To help you out, we have composed a list of fun vacation spots that you can see this year and some helpful tips for safe travel along the way as a member of the queer community.

Safe Travel Tips

  • Before we get into the hottest and safest destinations, it is important to discuss some general tips that can ensure that you enjoy a fun and safe trip. To start, you should ensure that you are up to date on your shots and vaccinations so you are prepared for the unique threats of the country you plan to visit. Before you go to the doctor, make a list of questions and concerns you have, including what side effects you might face and the best way to take any necessary medications.
  • It is also important to research your potential destination ahead of time to check out the cultural norms and learn what is acceptable and what may rub the people of the region the wrong way. For instance, in some countries like Turkey, making the wrong hand gesture can be considered rude. Even the colors you wear may have an emotional impact. An example of this is in Africa, where the color red is often associated with death. Needless to say, you should do your research before you pack your bags.
  • Finally, even if you go to a place that is considered safe, you may still encounter strange and dangerous scenarios. If you’re traveling with a partner, it is essential that you speak to each other and have an understanding of what makes each of you uncomfortable and what you simply cannot tolerate. You could even make up code words! By having a discussion, you can ensure that you both have fun without any awkward or scary moments — and you can quickly exit an uncomfortable or dangerous situation.

With that said, let’s talk about some fun and safe destinations to consider:

Sydney, Australia

Australia is famous for its fun cities and amazing people, and while there are plenty of places to visit in the country, you can’t go wrong with Sydney. The city is very welcoming to LGBTQIA+ travelers. Some say that the country as a whole is one of the most gay-friendly in the world, as 79% of Australians agree that homosexuality should be accepted by society. Remember to partake in awesome bro-bonding activities while you’re down under. Take your camera and visit some of the famous places in the area, including the Sydney Opera House and Taronga Zoo, or enjoy amazing wine and other alcoholic beverages in the Hunter Valley.

Norway

Many experts also consider Norway to be one of the world's most LGBT-friendly nations due to its acceptance of same-sex marriage and support of gay, lesbian and bisexual people in the Armed Forces. From a vacation standpoint, there is a ton to do. You can start each morning by taking a hike through gorgeous forests and amazing mountains. Later in the afternoon, you can travel to the arctic circle, where you can sail through the smooth waterways and see sights that you won’t experience anywhere else.

France

France is considered to be one of the most romantic destinations in the world, and it also has a lot of fun things to do and see if you are visiting as friends. The country has famously had a laissez-faire attitude toward sexuality over the years, so the people there are not wrapped up in the politics surrounding it in other parts of the world. Instead, they tend to accept everyone for who they are.

Of course, there is a ton to do, including visiting the Eiffel Tower, the Palace of Versailles, or skiing the powdery snow of the alps if you are up for a little adventure. Any of the cities in this country, from Paris to Nice to Bordeaux, are amazing to see and offer their own experiences. Don’t forget to try some of the amazing food.

Thailand

Many people flock to Thailand to enjoy its gorgeous beaches, awesome Buddhist temples, and friendly people, and it is a welcoming place for all people. In fact, there is a vast transgender community, so they are very accepting of visitors from all backgrounds and sexual orientations. There are also many gay neighborhoods that are filled with great hotels and plenty of awesome nightclubs.

Canada

If you don’t want to travel too far, then consider a vacation in Canada. Arguably the most progressive nation in the Americas, Canada is very accepting of the LGTBQIA+ community, so you can travel unabashedly. There is also a ton to do, including eating at the many great restaurants, visiting the picturesque CN Tower, and traversing the many national parks.

As you can see, there are a ton of great destinations around the world that anyone can visit without fear of discrimination or danger. Consider the ideas and tips mentioned here, and you will enjoy your amazing vacation.
